BSO Sustainability

BSO Sustainability – Our Journey to Net Zero

BSO has launched its new Sustainability Strategy 2025–2030, setting out a clear plan to reduce our impact on the environment and create positive change for staff, communities, and the planet.

The strategy focuses on six key areas:

This ambitious plan is about working together. Staff are a major part of our sustainability goals, we want to hear from you! Look out for the posters across your service areas to learn how you can share your ideas, stories or suggestions on future sustainability activities.

Everyone in BSO has a role to play, and small actions will add up to big change.

‘Our Journey to Net Zero’ – is about working together to reduce our environmental impact and create positive change for staff, communities, and the planet. Here’s how it benefits you personally.

  • What does this mean for staff?

As a member of staff, you’ll be part of an organisation that’s leading by example — reducing waste, cutting energy use, and investing in cleaner, greener ways of working. You’ll have opportunities to get involved, learn new skills, and contribute to positive change.

  • How will this make our workplace better?

Our energy and estates improvements will make buildings more efficient, comfortable, and better lit and ventilated. Smart energy systems will help maintain stable indoor conditions while reducing costs — creating a healthier environment for everyone.

  • Will it affect how we travel to or for work?

Yes, in a good way – by increasing options for active travel, supporting cycle-to-work schemes, and introducing cleaner vehicles to the BSO fleet. Over time, this means quieter, cleaner journeys and more flexible travel choices for staff. Using active travel and public transport can also save you money.

  • How will it personally benefit staff?

Staff will benefit from lower utility costs across the organisation (freeing up resources for staff services), improved air quality, greener surroundings, and more chances to take part in wellbeing and biodiversity projects. Plus, being part of a sustainable workplace can boost pride and morale. By applying this approach at home you can also save your money on bills.

  • How can we get involved?

You can take part in sustainability campaigns, volunteer for green space or biodiversity projects, and share your own ideas for change. There will also be learning sessions and staff challenges where everyone can contribute.

  • Will this make any difference to our daily work?

A little at first — such as better recycling options, reminders to save energy, or new travel choices — but these small steps will add up to major progress toward Net Zero and a healthier working environment for all.

  • Why is this important for BSO?

Sustainability isn’t just about the planet — it’s about people. Reducing waste and emissions saves money, supports wellbeing, and ensures BSO continues to deliver vital services responsibly and efficiently.

  • How does this connect to the wider community?

BSO’s actions support the wider health and social care system and local communities by reducing pollution, improving green spaces, and investing in ethical and sustainable supply chains that create community benefit.
