In research, ‘Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement’ means involving people in all aspects of the research process as partners rather than as research participants. PPIE partners are part of the research team and can help shape all stages of the research cycle such as the research topic or question, how the research is carried out, and how the results are shared and applied in practice.
PPIE helps research teams to ask the right questions, prioritise topics that are important to patients and achieve outcomes that are meaningful to people. It also ensures research findings are heard and reported in an easily understandable way to improve care for patients in the future. This is why it is important to include PPIE in all stages of the project, from design, right through to dissemination.
Part of the HBS research project application process includes providing detail on PPIE. For most projects, some element of PPIE is expected. It is only in rare circumstances that PPIE will be deemed unnecessary, so it is important to plan for PPIE when considering applying to the HBS.
