Professor Cathie Sudlow’s independent review of the UK health data landscape, titled ‘Uniting the UK’s Health Data: A Huge Opportunity for Society’, was published on Friday 8 November 2024.
The report was commissioned by the Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Sir Chris Whitty, NHS England’s former National Director of Transformation, Dr Timothy Ferris, and the UK National Statistician Professor Sir Ian Diamond, with the support of the Chief Medical Officers in the devolved nations.
The review takes a UK-wide approach in mapping health-relevant data across the four nations, including a background of the various sources and types of health-relevant data, how health data could generate insights for patient and public benefit, and priority areas of action to address current barriers.

Office for Statistics Regulation publish update on Data Sharing and Linkage for the Public Good (12th August 2024)
The Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) published their follow-up report on data sharing and linkage across government on 17th July 2024. The report assesses progress that has been made towards the 16 recommendations OSR made in July 2023, to enable greater data sharing and linkage for research and statistics for the public good. It is relevant for all who want to see good-quality and secure data at the forefront of government decision-making and research.

Health Research Authority publish major report on People-Centred Clinical Research (8th August 2024)
The NHS Health Research Authority (HRA) have published a report on addressing the barriers to people-centred research along with a system wide call to action.
The HRA have made 19 recommendations are asking that researchers use this to make improvements to research they carry out in the future.
While the report mainly focuses on direct participation in clinical research the recommendations can also apply to secondary uses of data for research purposes (For example public engagement in co-creation and design of research, selection of projects, communication of results, assurances around safe use of data).

DARE UK scientific use cases workshop report published (12th July 2024)
The DARE UK scientific use cases workshop report summarises the outcomes of a collaborative effort between researchers and members of the public to identify 52 research use cases demonstrating the potential of a linked UK data research infrastructure to address societal challenges.
The workshop, designed and delivered in collaboration with The Public Service Consultants (The PSC) and members of the public, aimed to explore the research opportunities and societal challenges that could be addressed if the UK’s data research infrastructure was securely linked. This aligns with the DARE UK vision to design and deliver a coordinated and trustworthy national data research infrastructure for public benefit.
