New Faces, New Futures: The Leadership Centre Welcomes HSC’s 2025 Graduate Trainees
This September, the HSC Leadership Centre opened its doors to ten exceptional individuals embarking on the Health and Social Care Northern Ireland Graduate Training Scheme. With career pathways spanning Human Resources and Organisational Development (HROD), Engineering, Accountancy, and General Management, these new trainees represent a fresh wave of talent, ambition, and purpose within our health and social care system.
The graduate trainee journey began with a two week induction programme that was as immersive as it was inspiring. From the outset, the atmosphere was one of energy and anticipation. The opening sessions offered a warm welcome and a comprehensive overview of the scheme, setting the tone for a journey rooted in collaboration, learning, and leadership.
- Week one focused on building strong foundations. Trainees were introduced to their scheme leads, managers and mentors, engaged in team-building exercises, and explored the broader context of health and social care in Northern Ireland. They heard directly from second-year trainees, whose candid reflections offered valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs ahead. Sessions on digital tools, HR systems, and key policies ensured that each trainee was equipped with the practical knowledge needed to navigate their new environment. External visits to the Department of Health, the Strategic Planning and Performance Group (SPPG), Public Health Agency (PHA) and the Business Services Organisation (BSO) provided a behind the scenes look at the strategic workings of the system. We are grateful to the Interim Permanent Secretary, Mike Farrar and Directors of these organisations that took time out of their busy schedules to offer their insights and answer questions.
- Week two took the trainees deeper into the operational and strategic landscape of HSC. They met with representatives from Trusts and Arm’s Length Bodies including Southern and Western Trusts, NI Ambulance Service (NIAS) and NI Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS), as well as the Social Care Council and Children’s Court Guardian Agency. These encounters were more than introductions, they were opportunities to connect with the people and organisations that make up the fabric of our health and social care system. A visit to Queen’s Healthcare Library underscored the importance of continuous learning, while a lively escape room challenge and a networking lunch helped forge bonds that will carry through the programme and beyond.
The induction however is only the beginning. As these trainees move into their placements, the role of those they partner with becomes crucial. Managers, mentors, and colleagues across HSC have a unique opportunity, and responsibility, to help shape the leaders of tomorrow. By offering guidance, sharing expertise, and creating space for challenge and growth, placement partners play a vital role in building the knowledge, skills, and confidence these graduates need to thrive.
Leadership doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s cultivated through experience, reflection, and meaningful relationships. Whether it’s a conversation over coffee, a project that stretches their thinking, or a moment of encouragement during a tough day, every interaction matters. The support and investment of those across the system will not only help these trainees succeed, it will help ensure the future of HSC is in capable, compassionate hands.
Their journey is just beginning, but already they are making their mark. We look forward to watching them grow over the next two years and to the many contributions they will make to the HSC system and the people it serves.
