Laura Molloy and Joanne Allison were invited to speak at ‘Transforming Digital Pathology & AI: The Path Forward’ on behalf of Sectra UK Ltd, which took place at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Scotland on 8th May 2024.
Digital Pathology is evolving rapidly, presenting both opportunities and challenges. The emergence and integration of AI in health has generated much debate, shedding light on the wider considerations that need to be navigated to fully harness AI’s potential in digital imaging.
Laura Molloy (NIPACS+ Senior Project Manager) and Joanne Allison (NIPACS+ Programme Manager) presented on ‘Digital Pathology – From Concept to Reality across Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland’.
Their presentation focussed on the successful implementation of Digital Pathology in Northern Ireland. It took the audience through the drivers that paved the way for implementation, the implementation process, and the subsequent lessons learned.
Northern Ireland is an early adopter of Digital Pathology and was the first in the UK to implement this as an Enterprise Imaging service to include Radiology and Digital Pathology within the same system.
The implementation of Digital Pathology in Northern Ireland has provided a modernised approach to Pathology interpretation and reporting. This provides a solid foundation from which the service can consider the future approach to AI integration.
The event provided the opportunity for like-minded experts and technology providers to share and discuss the best ways to further develop this fast-moving area of healthcare in a safe, sustainable and scalable way.
